Omissions in the use of Conjunctions

Omissions in the use of Conjunctions: A conjunction is a word that is used to connect words, phrases, and clauses.

A) Use of Coordinating conjunctions: this conjunction is used to connect items that are grammatically equal: two words or two phrases.  Exampes are for , and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

  • I don’t like to run swim. (Incorrect)
  • I don’t like to run or swim. (Correct)
  • He was clever , lazy.  (Incorrect)
  • He was clever but lazy.  (Correct)
  • B)  Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that work together. Some examples are either/or, neither/nor, and not only/but also.

  • Not only am I finished studying for Geography, I’m also finished writing my history essay.  (Incorrect) 
  • Not only am I finished studying for Geography, but I’m also finished writing my history essay.  (Correct)
  • C)   A subordinating conjunction can show a cause-and-effect relationship or a contrast, or a type of relationship between the clauses. Common subordinating conjunctions are because, since, as, although, though, while, and whereas. 

  • I can stay out the clock strikes twelve.   (Incorrect) 
  • I can stay out until the clock strikes twelve. (Correct)
  • D)  Not all verbs can be followed by a that-clause

  • Incorrect: The teacher asked that why I was late.
  • Correct: The teacher asked why I was late.
  • E) When a negative expression comes at the beginning of a sentence, we use an inverted word order. That means the auxiliary verb comes before the subject. Note that only the auxiliary verb is inverted. The rest of the verb goes after the subject.

  • Incorrect: No sooner we reached the station, the train left.
  • Correct: No sooner did we reach the station, than the train left.
  • Incorrect: Not only he abused me but also beat me.
  • Correct: Not only did he abuse me but he also beat me.
